Asking here mainly out of curiosity, and I've never played a Dragon character, but some friends of mine who have, say that while Coils of the Dragon are great in TT, they're somewhat redundant in most LARP circumstances as they are mostly downtime oriented. If this is correct, I'd say that severely limits their power compared to Cruac and Theban.
Any thoughts and arguments on this?

I've yet to see a Coil of the Dragon interact at all with the LARP that I'm playing in so my vote would be that they're largely pointless...
doesn't mean that the Ordo Dracul is less liked however... bloody thing is like cockroaches... no matter how many you think you kill there's always another one hiding behind the fridge...

Hmmm....well, I play a Dragon in our game, and I don't think the Coils as a whole are oriented towards downtime at all (although some are, to be sure).
Let's take a look, shall we?
Coil of Blood: Blood Seeps Slowly. I have this one - and let me tell you, the assurance of never entering game with less than half of your Vitae pool (and a 50% chance of being full) is pretty damn good. Now, all I need to do is get the Daeva Eminent, and my character never has to test again...
Coil of Blood: Blood of Beasts. This can be particularly useful during game to those people playing higher-BP characters. They don't have to feed off of other Kindred, so they have more options for feeding, should they find themselves particularly hungry.
Coil of Blood: Perspicacious Blood. More Vitae for the same amount of work? Not bad - and works either in downtime (or in any feeding scenes before the character enters play), or during game if the PC gets depleted of Vitae somehow.
Coil of Banes: Conquer the Red Fear. This is easy - handy and useful at game, should someone ever try to torch you. I'm not saying such things should be commonplace in a LARP, but that if such a thing were to occur, this is immediately useful in game.
Coil of Banes: Surmounting the Daysleep. Okay, this one is largely a downtime one, as most games assume that you are out at night, and little is done during the day. However, I've used this one in conjunction with the next to fake being more powerful than I am by showing up to Elysium not long after the sun was down - certainly much, much sooner than any other Kindred in the city could have arrived. The "WTF" looks on some characters' faces was priceless.
Coil of Banes: Sun's Forgotten Kiss. See the above example.
Coil of the Beast: Chastise the Beast. Completely useful during any game session, to keep the occurance of frenzy down.
Coil of the Beast: Lure the Beast. Should combat break out in game, this can help provide all the benefits of frenzy, without any of the drawbacks. Good stuff.
Coil of the Beast: Exhaust the Beast. Sure, while performing the activity that triggers this Tier can be construed as a "downtime action" of sorts, it's inherently beneficial in the game.
Other than the second tier of Coil of Banes, I'm not sure what your friends mean exactly, by saying the Coils are redundant of downtime oriented.
Could you clarify a bit, perhaps?
